Our grandparents grew their own food, made their own clothes, did not pay cable tv fees or cell phone fees or water bills involving new sewer hookups. They were, in many ways, completely self-sufficient.
Yes, they had to work mighty hard. But, then on the other hand, they had no need to ever run to Wal-Mart for anything.
