About 30 Years Later

So, in my ongoing quest to drive my kinfolks crazy, let's take another look at my Ging cousins from last weekend. Now let's jump in the time machine and travel back a few decades. Once upon a time, they and their mother were spending a few days with our grandmother during the summer. They all, along with my mother and brother, spent a day together and toured the countyside where my grandmother had grown up. One of their stops was the Upper Cedar Creek Cemetery where my grandmother Lucy's father and grandfather are buried. (I was working, so did not get to join in the fun. Wish I had been there.)

Mother came back with a camera full of photos and two of the gems that day were my little boy cousins, resting as the grownups poked around the cemetery. Mother said their mother had tried to run them off their resting places, but was stopped by my grandmother who said to leave them alone. She was certain that their ancestors would not mind them perching on their headstones.

They were cute little toots back then. Hard to believe they've turned into the fine looking men they are. Now they have their own cute little kids running around.

God, I feel old.

I don't think I've ever seen that picture. Sadly, all of our childhood photos were misplaced several years ago, and we fear they are gone forever. I bet I must have been no more than three in that photo. Good stuff, Good stuff!

I remember that day. It was the summer of 1981, I think. Every time we turned the car down a road and the kids realized it was another cemetery they'd groan....

If it was 1981, I would have turned four on August 14th. Looks about right. Remember MoMo's pot roasts? She'd cook one every time we came up...and we'd groan at that too. The lighting in that house gave the gravy a greenish hue and we'd be warned not to mention the green gravy (threatened with a severe lashing). Wish we could have just one more of them now though (the pot roasts, not the lashings). I remember that old car she kept in her backyard...any idea what it was?

I had forgotten about her having a car briefly. I don't remember what kind it was and I don't think she drove it much. She didn't have a driver's license - Pawpaw did all the driving - but she had learned to drive somewhere along the way and got the notion to get a car after he got too ill to drive. Bet Unkie would remember. He probably got it for her.

I remember the car too. I think she got it after Paw Paw had died and yes Unkie did get it for her. It was one of the cars he hauled in when he was dealing in junk cars but that one was in fairly good shape and ran fairly well. I can remember everyone getting quite a laugh over her driving herself to the police station in Elgin and telling them that she wanted to get the book so she could study it for her driving test. They knew she drove down there without a license, but they let it slide. I don't thinks she ever did get it though because she got concerned about her vision and possibly getting in an accident and hurting someone else.

LKP is wrong about the car. Mother bought it before Daddy died. I am fairly sure that she bought it from Charles (Pekar) and his brother. It had been their father's car. Good thing some of us oldies are around to keep the facts straight!

I don't remember her pot roasts, probably because we ate the same recipe at home. But I do remember the best thin-sliced fried potatoes in culinary history. And Ranch Style beans! I asked her to give Mama the recipe for those delicious beans she always served. She laughed because I didn't know they were a brand that came out of a can. She didn't take many shortcuts though. Will I ever have a homemade cake doughnut like hers again? No.

That's cuz we don't fry in lard these days. Same reason you will never again enjoy the exact taste of the cottage fries or the chicken fried steak. And nobody seems to have the recipe for the icing she used on those doughnuts she didn't dust with cinnamon/sugar. And her tomato/okra gumbo was great, too. I'm getting hungry now.
